David Finds Work & Renewed Faith
David was born in Wayne County, Michigan to a “poor but Godly family.” After making some choices that got him into trouble, he spent 10 years in prison. During this time, David didn’t have a single visitor, but this didn’t stop him from being productive. He studied the Bible and attended Bible studies while incarcerated. David explains that reading the Bible gave him the consolation and strength he needed to struggle through his imprisonment.
After being out of prison for five years, David was falsely accused of a crime by a family member. This landed him in Kent County Jail. With his charge still pending, David came to Guiding Light and was allowed into the Back to Work program. The Back to Work program at Guiding Light is 120 days total where men must secure a job within the first phase of 30 days. As of that morning, in spite of David’s efforts, he had not yet found a position. Time was running out.
“God, don’t you love me?” David said to himself as he stood in front of his locker in Guiding Light’s Back to Work lounge area. David was on the edge of despair. He knew he needed to secure a job in order to continue staying at Guiding Light. The loving God he had been taught about as a child seemed so far away.
That day of anxiety and despair transformed to excitement when David opened his mail and was notified that the pending charge had been dropped. A short time later, a phone call came. The person on the line asked David if he would be interested in coming in to interview for a trucking job. He received an offer that same day.
As David shared his story with us, all the licensing and paperwork for his new job had been completed and he was ready to start the next morning. When David receives his first paycheck, he will save 75 percent with Guiding Light to prepare for his transition back into housing and the community.
“When I thought God didn’t hear me he came through, just like he always does!”
With your support, Guiding Light was able to provide David with the tools he needed to find work, spiritual support, guidance saving money, and help to prepare a plan for his future.
