Volunteer Work at Camp Henry

Over the weekend, the men of Guiding Light Recovery drove up to Newaygo to volunteer at Camp Henry, a local retreat organization that “provides life changing experiences for all in a Christian environment.” Once every four months, the men spend a weekend at the camp as clients, participating in team-building exercises and activities designed to bring them closer together as brothers in recovery. This, however, was not the fun and games they are used to, instead the men spent the day hard at work helping the camp with spring cleaning and renovations. The men split up into groups helping camp employees and volunteers with roofing, cutting firewood, landscaping, and drywalling among other tasks.

Being able to give back through volunteer work is a big part of the program here at Guiding Light. Being selfless and helping out your fellow brothers and sisters is integral to advancing one’s journey in sobriety and independence. We are so grateful to Camp Henry and all the memories they have provided us over the years, and helping out this weekend is the least we could do to show our appreciation.

The value of community collaboration is a very important part of the organizational culture at Guiding Light. We believe that we are all in this together, and local non-profits and organizations like us need to cooperate and collectively work to promote our shared values and goals of helping those in need throughout West Michigan. We recognize that, ultimately, we all just want to make our community a better place for everyone, and we are always more than happy to do our part in the mission to reach that objective together. Being able to house, feed, teach, and provide our clients with experiences like they receive at Camp Henry would not be possible without you, our donors, volunteers, and advocates. God Bless you and thank you, from all of us at Guiding Light.
