The Power of Silence

In the busyness of everyday life, it’s rare to find time for quiet. But for the men and women in our recovery program, stepping away from the noise is not just a luxury. It becomes a key milestone in their recovery journey.

Participants in our Recovery Program travel to the Hermitage once during the foundations phase of their time at Guiding Light. The Hermitage is a monastery retreat center in Three Rivers tucked away from distractions, where they spend a few days in complete silence. The men are used to being in an urban setting, right in Heartside, and so it’s impactful for them to have 60 acres to explore. No phones, no conversation, no outside contact. Just time to be still, reflect, and listen to the voice of God.

The work done here at Guiding Light is about the inside, the change in heart, thoughts, and character. The silence may seem intimidating at first, but what often begins as discomfort turns into clarity, healing, and a deeper connection with something greater than themselves. This silence can be uncomfortable at first during meal times, but quickly becomes appreciated as they can focus on enjoying the caretaker’s vegetarian meals.

One participant shared what he experienced during his time there: “I just had this feeling that it’s never too late to recommit my life to doing His work.”

These are not small realizations. They are glimpses of grace that stay with a person long after the retreat is over. Sometimes, the experience brings up emotion that words can’t quite hold.

“Listening to God is a dangerous business without a Kleenex box nearby,” one man joked.

But behind the humor is deep gratitude. Gratitude for the chance to slow down. Gratitude for a safe space to reflect. And gratitude for the support that makes this kind of growth possible.

“Thank you Guiding Light and the donors for giving me an experience I will truly never forget. The only way I can express my gratitude is by staying strong and working the program.”

Silent retreats have become a cornerstone of the recovery process here at Guiding Light. In the stillness, many of our participants come face to face with the truth of who they are, and more importantly, who they can become.

“It was a reminder of how much He truly loves me and that I’ve done nothing to earn it or deserve it.”
