Recovery Focus Points: Willingness

At Guiding Light, programming is centered around 7 Focus Points:

Willingness, Honesty, Vulnerability, Self-Awareness, Self-Compassion, Responsibility, and Spiritual Formation. We believe these focus points, or characteristics, are needed to have the best opportunity for life-long recovery and we work to incorporate these into all aspects of what we do.

WILLINGNESS

Guiding Light’s first programming Focus Point is WILLINGNESS. We spend two our of sixteen weeks in Foundations digging into the concept and practice of willingness.

Taking action in small things results in big changes, and so we ask the men to make declarations of what they will do above and beyond the required structure to keep their recovery moving forward. We show ourselves willing through doing small, sometimes tedious, often repetitive, actions, knowing that it is the foundation of transformation.

A simple question we ask the program men and ourselves is, “What does it look like to show yourself willing?” It can be as simple as starting the day with making the bed, which is required here, trying to instill a ‘win the morning, win the day’ attitude. It can be as big as reconciling with a family member.
