Guiding Light Donor Relations Officer Bob Evans has been named one of Senior Neighbors’ “16 Over 60” for his engagement in the community and impact on the lives of others.
Now in its fourth year, the award program annually selects 16 individuals over the age of 60 in Kent County who have inspired others and positively impacted the community through business excellence and other extraordinary efforts. Evans and other recipients will be honored during the annual 16 Over 60 Awards Gala on Nov. 17 at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park.
His nomination read in part: “Rev. Evans has been active in the Heartside neighborhood for decades, helping countless individuals. He has worked tirelessly from dawn through dusk for anyone seeking his assistance. He has performed this service, not looking for any personal recognition but because of his commitment to his Lord and Savior. In my eyes, he is an unsung hero.”
For the past five years, Evans’ role with Guiding Light has focused on nurturing donor relationships. He helps donors structure their stewardship donations so their contributions can have the greatest impact on individuals who are struggling with homelessness or addiction.
Prior to his role with Guiding light, Evans worked in case management for faith-based nonprofit organizations for many years. He has maintained relationships with about 15 of his former clients, continuing to provide them guidance and support.
“While case management was my first love, I’ve found a second love in fundraising in my 60s,” Evans said. “I’ve been able to continue my passion for helping others through many volunteer roles in the community, continued relationships with my former clients and a full-time position as a donor relations officer at Guiding Light.
“The experience and connections I’ve built over the years have granted me numerous opportunities to mentor individuals who are struggling as well as churches and nonprofit organizations who are looking to expand their services.”
Outside of Guiding Light, Evans consults with nonprofit organizations on their operational activities from a donor relations and community connections perspective, and he serves on the boards of 501(c)(3) church organizations.
He also is actively involved with his church as a Bible teacher and supply pastor. Additionally, he records a weekly devotional for a church that has an online ministry specifically for people in addiction recovery.
In his award application to Senior Neighbors, Evans shared an inner desire to give people a second chance is what drives him.
“I believe everyone is deserving of making amends and changing to create a better life,” Evans said. “I’m blessed to have found such great opportunities to continue serving the community in different ways in my 60s and in the decades to come.”
The mission of Senior Neighbors is to enhance the lives of seniors. The organization serves more than 4,000 older adults in Kent County annually, helping them stay independent through a wide range of essential services and five Senior Neighbors centers.
