Community Presentations at Guiding Light

The focus points of willingness, honesty, vulnerability, self-awareness, self-compassion, responsibility, and spiritual formation are important principles to live by for men seeking to free themselves from the bondage of drugs and alcohol.

We believe the clients of the four-month Guiding Light Recovery program need these characteristics to have the best opportunity possible in order to achieve long-term sobriety. Each of these focus point principles are thoroughly, comprehensively, and holistically explored in the core curriculum of Guiding Light Recovery. Every seven weeks, clients are required to give a presentation in front of their peers to exhibit their understanding of what they have learned from their time so far in the program.

The Guiding Light Recovery staff work together to assign each man a specific focus point. The client is then given a few days to prepare a seven to fifteen-minute lecture on their understanding of said focus point. An important aspect of the Guiding Light Recovery program is for clients to demonstrate their knowledge and experience with regards to the seven focus points that our curriculum is structured around. Though each man may have his variations, we want every client to be able to articulate and communicate his hope for what these points mean to him as he grows in the recovery process. Presentation week is a powerful metric for both clients and staff to measure how far they have come since they walked through the doors of 255 Division Avenue. Outside volunteers, supporters, and former clients of the Recovery program are often invited to attend presentation week. Being able to hear feedback and critique from perspectives outside of the day to day programming of Guiding Light can be helpful.

Giving men recovering from addiction the space to learn a new design for living is an unquantifiable blessing. It costs roughly $300 a day to house, feed, and teach our clients how a life in sobriety is possible, and we could not do it without you, our donors, supporters, and volunteers. Thank you so much, from all of us at Guiding Light.
