Guiding Light Recovery’s New Gym is Officially Open!

Mark lifting weights in new GL gym.

Thank you to all of our partners and generous donors who made the construction of our brand new gymnasium. This is such an excellent space and addition to our 255 Division S. facility, and a sacred space for men to heal their physical being from years of addiction. We could not do this without you. Check out WOOD TV 8’s report on our grand opening here.

A particularly huge thank you to Wolverine Building Group for providing the funds to build this blessed space. Their President, Curt Mulder is proud to be a part of the solution today: “This project is part of our “Step-Up and Step-In” initiative which provides in-kind services to area organizations, teaming with our incredible subcontractors. The passion for this effort is not lost on our team as our industry grapples with a high substance-abuse use rate nationally, making this project with Guiding Light a perfect fit.”

Also thank you to the hard work of all the contractors at Armock, Swanson Electric, D9 Systems/L&W Supply, Standard Lumber, Knight Transfer, Dalstra Roofing, West Michigan Commercial Flooring, and Vork Brother’s Painting. Thank you so much!

This dedicated on-site gym reflects an in-kind and cash donation totaling approximately $25,000, and made possible by the generosity of Wolverine Building Group (WBG). WBG and a team of 8 subcontractors contributed more than 1100 hours and building materials to transform and expand an area once used as a food pantry into a bright and inviting work out space available to men in the Guiding Light Recovery program. The time and materials amount to $20,000 through contributions from Armock, Swanson Electric, D9 Systems/L&W Supply, Standard Lumber, Knight Transfer, Dalstra Roofing, West Michigan Commercial Flooring, and Vork Brother’s Painting. Wolverine Building Group also donated an additional $5000 towards the purchase of commercial-grade exercise equipemtn, raised through a voluntary “sober october” company-wide challenge last fall. Ben, originally from Grandville and participant in Guiding Light programming said: “Working out has allowed me to experience self compassion in a new way. Since I never really cared about how I treated my body in the past, I wasn’t very kind to it,” he said. “Having a gym onsite is going to be helpful in managing anxiety and achieving goals I set for myself.”
