At Guiding Light, food ministry is about service, dignity, partnership, and a shared commitment to meeting a basic human need.

Every pallet of food that arrives at our doors represents an opportunity. Our staff and participants work together to unload, weigh, and separate each delivery so it can be shared in the way it is needed most. In that process, something meaningful happens. The work becomes hands-on service, and the people involved become part of something bigger than themselves. Volunteering and service work are a critical element to long-term recovery because it helps reintegrate individuals into community and instills a sense of dignity and purpose.

For the men and women in our recovery programs, food ministry is a chance to contribute, to build responsibility, and to experience the value of helping others. Recovery is not only about healing from what has been broken. It is also about rediscovering purpose, confidence, and connection. Serving in this capacity gives participants the opportunity to practice those things every day.

It also reflects a core value that shapes how we serve the community. We do not want to duplicate services that other local nonprofits are already providing well. Instead, we want to strengthen the work of others by creating partnership opportunities that extend the reach of everyone involved. When organizations work together, more people are reached, more needs are met, and the impact goes farther than any one organization could go alone.

That spirit of partnership is an important part of our food ministry. We share food with many organizations across the community, including Our Hope, Degage, Exodus Place, and many more. These relationships matter because they allow us to respond to need in a coordinated, thoughtful way. Rather than working in isolation, we are able to support a broader network of care that serves people more effectively.

The numbers from our 2025 Annual Impact Report show just how much this matters. Here at Guiding Light, we served 35,575 meals. In addition, we shared 276,064 meals out in the community through distribution to local partners. Behind every one of those meals is a story of provision, teamwork, and generosity. These are not just statistics. They are tangible signs of what happens when a community chooses to care for one another.

At its heart, food ministry is about common humanity. Everyone needs to eat. Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity. Everyone benefits when they are surrounded by people willing to show up, lend a hand, and share what they have. Food is one of the simplest ways to meet need.

That is what makes this work so meaningful at Guiding Light. It serves the men and women in our programs through instilling a spirit of volunteerism. It strengthens local partnerships. It helps meet a basic need in our community. And it reminds us that one of the most important ways to love our neighbor is to make sure they are fed. That is the kind of impact we are grateful to be part of.
